TMC pushes for renaming West Bengal to 'Bangla' during Zero Hour in Parliament
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has confirmed that the next season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) will commence on March 23, 2025. The announcement was made by BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla following a Special General Meeting held in Mumbai on Sunday.
In the same meeting, Devajit Saikia and Prabhtej Singh Bhatia were elected as the new BCCI secretary and treasurer, respectively. Both were chosen unopposed, as they were the only individuals to submit nominations for these key positions, which had been vacated by Jay Shah and Ashish Shelar.
Ahead of the IPL 2025 season, the grand two-day auction took place, where Rishabh Pant made history by becoming the most expensive player in IPL auction history. The Lucknow Super Giants secured the star wicketkeeper-batsman for a staggering Rs 27 crore.
Shreyas Iyer, who captained Kolkata Knight Riders to an IPL title last season, was bought by Punjab Kings for Rs 26.75 crore, making him the second most expensive player in the league's history. Another notable acquisition was Venkatesh Iyer, who was re-acquired by KKR for Rs 23.75 crore, establishing himself as the most expensive allrounder in IPL history.
In addition to the IPL updates, Rajeev Shukla also mentioned that a meeting regarding the selection of the Indian squad for the upcoming Champions Trophy will be held on January 18th or 19th. The deadline for submitting provisional squads to the International Cricket Council (ICC) is set for January 12. As of now, only three teams—England, New Zealand, and Bangladesh—have made their squads public.
